Harris County Democratic Party Chair Announces Departure Plans

Odus Evbagharu Intends to Step Down Feb. 28

Houston — Odus Evbagharu, chair of the Harris County Democratic Party, today announced his intent to leave the position on Feb. 28, 2023.

Evbagharu has led HCDP since 2021. He is the youngest person and the first African American to serve as HCDP Chair.

“I treasure the work we were able to accomplish during the last two years,” Evbagharu said.

“It has been a tremendous honor to serve as chair of the state’s largest Democratic county party. I am very proud of what we were able to accomplish together. We centered people, precincts, and policy, and Harris County will be better for it.”

Under Evbagharu’s leadership, HCDP raised more than $2.1 million and created new programs dedicated to voter outreach and volunteer recruitment.

“We will be forever grateful for Odus Evbagharu’s dedication, leadership and amazing energy,” said HCDP Executive Director Kylie McNaught.

“His collaborative mindset and dedication to coalition building led to a Democratic supermajority on Harris County Commissioners Court for the first time since the 1970s.

“He has expanded HCDP’s reach and strengthened our partnerships with allied groups and organizations, while championing progressive causes on the front lines in our community.”

Prior to his election as Chair, Evbagharu served as Communications Director and Candidate Coordinator for HCDP. He worked as Chief of Staff and campaign manager for Texas State Rep. Jon Rosenthal in House District 135.

Evbagharu continues to serve on the board of directors for the Texas Freedom Network and as treasurer for the Texas Democratic Party.

An election for the next chair of the Harris County Democratic Party will take place Sunday, March 19, 2023.
